Usb Power Saving Settings

Right click on the usb root hub you want to change and then click on properties to open the usb port s properties dialog box.

Under the power management tab you will see the option for restricting power to the usb port to save battery power. Set both the on battery and plugged in settings to disabled then click ok to apply changes. Click the start button and type edit power plan in the windows search box. Or check it to let windows turn off usb ports to save power.

Click change advanced power settings. Click on the power management tab and then choose the power settings you want using the check boxes next to each option. Click change advanced power settings then scroll down to usb settings and click the little plus next to usb selective suspend setting to expand the options. Under the selected power plan click change plan settings.

Repeat this process for each usb port hub you want to change. For the notebook computer in our example there is only a balanced setting. Click on power options. The operating system microsoft windows 7 allows the computer to shut off power to usb devices to save power.

Under the power tab you can see the power output for that usb port. Choose your desired settings using the checkboxes and then click on ok to save these settings. Under preferred plan click the change plan settings link for the plan you re currently using. Depending on your computer you may see several preset plan settings balanced power saving performance etc.

If you want to enable windows vista to turn off the usb root hub when the computer is running on battery power click enabled in the on battery list. Click the power management tab. If you change the settings on the power plan that isn t active this won t. In the power options dialog box expand usb settings and then expand usb selective suspend setting.

Click on ok to save your changes.
